We’re smack-dab in the
middle of hurricane season in some areas of the country, tornado season in
other areas, and fire season in areas of drought. So would you be prepared if a
natural disaster hit?
When preparing for a
possible emergency situation, the first thing you need to do is create an
emergency supply kit. Here’s a rundown of what every kit should contain. Put
these items in several plastic storage containers with tight lids (don’t use
one large container, or it will be too heavy to pick up and move), and keep
them in an easily accessible place.
·
Water—a three-day
supply for dinking and sanitation (1 gallon per person per day)
·
Food—at least a
three-day supply of nonperishable food
·
One blanket or
sleeping bag for each person
·
Flashlight with
extra batteries
·
Battery-powered
radio with extra batteries
·
First aid kit
·
Whistle—to signal
for help
·
Dust mask—to
filter out any contaminated air
·
Moist towelettes
and garbage bags for personal sanitation
·
Crescent wrench
or large pliers to turn off utilities
·
Local map
·
Can opener for
any canned food
For a list of other items
to consider adding to your kit—like pet food and important documents, visit the
Department of Homeland Security’s website at www.ready.gov/build-a-kit.
Be sure your family has a
plan—you may not all be together in one place when disaster strikes, and you’ll
need to be able to reach one another.
