I
have a friend who has been a smoker ever since we were in college. It didn’t
seem like a big deal back then—lots of people smoked, and she was too young and
naïve to worry about dying from cancer, or choking on her last breath as
emphysema finally claimed her. She has tried to quit plenty of times over the
years, but she’s never truly been able to quit for good. In the meantime, now
she’s old enough to start thinking about retiring. And like many of us of a
(ahem) certain age, she’s worried that she won’t have enough money to do so.
About
a week ago, I was surfing around on the internet, and I stumbled upon the
American Cancer Society website. I found the most amazing calculator, and I
immediately forwarded the link to my friend. She called me right away. “Wow,”
she said. “This really puts it all into perspective.”
If
you’re still struggling to quit smoking, here’s the link I shared with my
friend: http://bit.ly/1cuhY4s. It’s a calculator that
tells you exactly how much money you are wasting to support your deadly habit.
My friend immediately made an appointment with her doctor to get help quitting.
And best of all, now she’s putting every cent she formerly spent on cigarettes
directly into her retirement account.
