Aging and Weight Gain Don’t Have to Go Hand in Hand

If you’ve already passed your fiftieth birthday, you know what I’m talking about: All of a sudden, it’s almost impossible to maintain a healthy weight. It’s a fact that as we age our metabolism slows. So rein in the gain with these tasty foods:

Apples. Believe it or not, eating apples actually subtracts calories from your diet. That’s because the calories your body uses to break down the fiber in the apple exceed those contained in the fruit. Bottom line: The more apples you eat, the more weight you lose. Just don’t get carried away—after all, man (or woman!) cannot live by apples alone.

Avocados. Mash one and mix it with lemon or lime juice and your choice of herbs. Then use it to replace higher-calorie spreads and toppings like butter, cream cheese, sour cream, or mayonnaise.

Bananas. Trying to lose weight? Wake up and smell the bananas! Studies have shown that dieters who sniffed a banana whenever they felt like munching on food lost an average of 30 pounds in six months.

Honey. Forget about restrictive diets or expensive weight-loss products. Instead, half an hour before each meal, mix 2 teaspoons of honey in a glass of water, and drink it down. It’ll naturally suppress your appetite so you won’t be as tempted to overeat.

Hot-pepper sauce. Recent studies have shown that adding just a few dashes of hot-pepper sauce to your daily diet suppresses your appetite. One of the tastiest ways to put this firepower to work: Add it to tomato juice.

Vinegar. Before each meal, mix 1 teaspoon of apple cider vinegar in a glass of warm water (make sure it’s warm!), and drink up. If you’re like most folks, this elixir will decrease your appetite, so you’ll just naturally want to eat less, and that—combined with getting more exercise—is the healthiest way to shed unwanted pounds!
