But this is no fooling—April has been designated as Sports Eye Safety Month and Women’s Eye Health and Safety Month by the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services. So, let’s celebrate the power of positive winking with these simple tips that’ll keep your peepers happy:
- At least once an hour—and preferably two or three times—take your eyes off what you’re doing and look into the distance for about 5 minutes.
- If you spend a lot of time staring at a computer screen, sit at least 20 inches away, and be sure that the top of the screen is either right at or just below eye level. Improper monitor placement is a common cause of eye pain.
- Covering your eyes with a warm, moist cloth is like giving them a relaxing bath. As soon as they start aching, soak a washcloth in warm water, wring it out, and drape if over your eyes. A compress works for dryness as well as for eyestrain and infections such as styes and conjunctivitis.
