Like a lot of other women my age, I once took sunbathing as seriously as final exams. I really went for “the bronze” back then. And to remind me of it now, I have a smattering of “the brown”—a bunch of flat, freckle-like age spots. Why me? Back when I sat in the sun on a regular basis, my body tried to defend my skin against solar damage by producing an excess of protective melanin. Over time, the melanin turned to cellular debris that bunched up in irregular patches. And voila—age spots!

You can spend big bucks on prescription skin creams or chemical peels, but sometimes the best remedies are the most basic. Here are some low-tech, but highly effective ways to make pesky age spots fade into the background.

  • Aloe gel may help fade skin spots by boosting cell turnover so the pigmented cells eventually slough off. Apply the gel directly to the spots twice a day for a month or two.
  • Lemon is a mild bleaching agent that works as well on age spots as it does on laundry stains. Mix equal parts of lemon juice and water and rub some on each spot. Leave it on for 5 minutes before rinsing.
  • For the darkest of age spots, combine 1 teaspoon each of grated horseradish, lemon juice, and vinegar with 3 drops of rosemary oil. Massage the mix into each spot, and wash it away with warm water after about 5 minutes.
  • Topical vitamin C penetrates the outer layers of the skin and encourages shedding of old skin cells, including those that contain melanin. Place 2 to 3 drops on your fingertips, and massage it into your age spots twice a day.
Remember, no matter how you attack them, your age spots will reappear with sun exposure. So never go outside without covering up and applying sunscreen—even in cold weather.
